Male gaze - Transformers (Michael Bay - 2007)

The scene opens with Megan Foxes character walking away from her boyfriend angrily after having an argument, straight after this shot the main protagonist of the story Sam is shown observing her from behind. The camera points directly at her from behind, this shows the way she is moving as she is swaying her hips as if she knows that somebody is watching her and she can put on a show. This shot is a P.O.V shot, not only from Sam but also from the audience, this shot is put in solely for the purpose of attracting male audience members to watching the film. Megan fox is used to portray the male love interest as she has a reputation for being attractive to men, and Michael Bay exploits Megan Fox as an actor and uses her within many different shots to advertise her body to the male audience.

One of the micro elements used immensely is cinematography. Many different shot types have been used to show Megan Fox's body as a sexual icon, and one of the key shots showing this is when Sam's car breaks down and Mikaela exits the car the take a look under the hood. A shot in this scene shows Mikaela's body as it pans up and down, it is also once again a P.O.V shot through Sam's eyes as he checks Mikaela out. There are several shots at this point in the scene where Sam does this.

Mise-en-scene has been used to construct
Mikaela's character through her costume, it is revealing as it is a short tight skirt with a high tank top, so it shows off her body and it is available for observing. A lot is shown through the body language also as Mikaela's body language shows her as being disinterested in Sam and she just wants to go home. But Sam's is very obvious as he shows an interest in her and he is also sweating and tense around her because he wants to show off and look his best. A moment that proves this is when Sam shows her 'new' attachments to his car, and while doing this tries to show his muscles to Mikaela and make him appear strong to her.

The male gaze theory is proven a lot in this clip as it shows that women are to be looked at in the many shots Megan Fox's body is to be admired by the male audience. And it also help with it suggesting that the camera is only a view for the male audience, and not just the audience but for characters too as a lot of the shots showing Fox's body was from a male characters point of view.
