Why exactly do film adaptations of video games not tend to do well?

  • Most films that are adaptations of video games are not often assigned a large budget.
  • Films directors are often not fans of the video game franchise and do not understand what makes it so popular.
  • Often leaves out key parts of the video game narratives that brings nostalgic appeals. For example an ending of the film may put a spin on the video game ending which many returning fans will not enjoy and will criticize.
  • Interactivity within a video game is essential, this keeps the audience interested and gives them the chance to control the narrative while in film, it is not possible to control a narrative.
  • Many hours of gameplay (on average 20-40) is hard to break down into a 2 hour film without having to cut corners or cut key information out.
