Film studies – psycho analysis
At the beginning of the scene we are shown Norman entering
the room with Marion where we get the first impression that Norman is a bit of
a unusual character and that he is quite intimidating to the audience. We are given
this opinion by the camera which shows a midshot were we are introduced to
birds of prey on the wall which happens to be Norman’s hobby.
As the scene progresses we see the camera showing a 2 shot
where we see the body language of Norman which makes us think even more that
Norman isn’t comfortable round women. We see that Marion is closer to the
camera however the director shows the background that gives us the impression
that Marion is in danger because all the birds s eem to be pointing at her.
In the next part of the scene we see Marion in a shot alone
were she is towards the left of the screen where she seems alone and isolated.
We get this effect due to the low camera angle that puts the camera at the same
height as the actors.
in the next few shots we seem to see a ordinary conversation
with the two characters however when Marion mentions Normans mother we see a
more threatening intimidating Norman . We know this because the camera is on a
low angle that gives us a sense of danger towards Marion. If we look in the
foreground we see the birds with their wings open sort of like their ready to
attack their prey which gives a completely different sense to the scene as in
the past scenes were the stuff birds looked calm.
Our opinions seem to become stronger that Norman isn’t right
in the head we see due to the next shot that he isn’t right in the head once
mad house gets mentioned. This close up emphasises emotions and gives us a
stronger sense of danger towards this strange character who is positioned in
the centre of the camra. We can see the birds in the background in a sort of
scared stance which we establish there is a sense of danger coming Marion’s way
as Norman edges closer to her.
Marion is brought to the attention that she may possibly be
in danger and she seems to be worried and uncomfortable with the reaction of
Norman however she seems to overcome this fear and regains control of situation
which changes Norman’s mind where he later comes down. We see Marion regaining
the situation by the medium close up that is shown as she progresses from being
vulnerable to being on top of the matter which ultimately calms Norman down.
