Lord of the rings: fellowship of the ring The opening scene of Lord of the rings starts of a non-diegetic music in the background as well as the narrator telling the story behind the montage shown on the screen. At the start it fades in of fire then cuts to a lava in a cup being poured into a something that will create these rings that the narrator is talking about this is a P.O.V shot that shows the audience that these special rings that were given to people were hand crafted with fire and lava. This would show that they have something special about them and why they are called the great rings. Another point of view shot is used to make it look like the audience are looking through the eyes of the person who is giving the rings to the Elves. It then goes into a body shot of three elves showing the rings on their fingers it then shows wind blow past them and then a low key lighting is used this would show these rings that have been given to them have got powers no other should experience. It then cuts to the seven Dwarves and another P.O.V is used when the seven rings are on the table and it then moves out to shows that all theseven dwarves picking them up this would indicate to the audience they have been given to these for a certain reason because they are great miners and craftsmen of the mountain hauls. They all then hold up their hands to the ring this will shows that they worship this ring and they didn’t get giving it to them for a punishment. Nine rings were gifted to the nine men who desired power the most, there is a mid shot of all nine men standing with the ring in front of them they then move the ring down this could show they didn’t want to wear the ring but keep it safe due to the powers it holds. Low-key lighting is used here to show that these men now have power and that they should be feared. It then fades out to show it has finished with telling you about the nine men who got gifted rings and now it is moving on to the next part of the story. When it shows a visual of a map this is to indicate it is an open world and the film will not just be set in one area of this world, as the narrator talks it scrolls across the map to show what part she is talking about this would give a point of view of the story and where all this takes place. It then cut to a volcano shooting out lava and described by the narrator of the fires of mount doom this would automatically make the audience know that something evil is living here and that he also seeks another ring. It cuts again to a close up of lord Sauron this was used to make the audience feel intimidated and scared. Fire then wipes the screen this would indicate that Lord Sauron’s ring is going to cause disaster, it then cuts to Sauron standing towards the right while lifting his hand up the camera then shakes this could indicate that he is the cause of disaster and it has already started ever sine he created the master ring this would show that he is in control of his own kingdom and again fire wipes the screen to a close up of the ring, while the ring is spinning the narrator describes what Sauron as put into this ring to create it. Fire wipes the screen before the ring is shown and after this would indicate to the audience it was made with fire and it can be destroyed by fire. Next you can then hear fire and destruction this is digetic due to seeing the camera shake an the fire beneath Sauron this is useful because later in the film this could indicate to the audience that he is coming or he is there. The next scene it shows Sauron’s hand with the ring on this would indicate to the audience that he holds the power to this master ring. Writing then appears on the ring in a close up this would show to the audience that they want them to concentrate on this ring in film and it is all about this special ring. The scene of the ring then dissolves to show what the disaster it has caused in towns civilians running and screaming away this will automatically indicate to the audience that the ring is evil and causes destruction in towns. It then shows a army marching towards the volcano this is a establishing shot showing were they are and to show how many people have stood up towards Sauron’s army it shows thousands of men standing up towards Sauron. The volcano will show that war is happening with the fire and the eruption sounds. There are numerous close ups of the other creatures on Sauron’s side this shows that this film is going to be fantasy or a sci-fi because these are abnormal creatures, to show these are evil they are green and blue with yellow eyes this shows that they aren’t fighting for good because they look completely different compared to the opposition side. The costume and make up in this scene are very well used to separate the different side’s good vs. evil the good side look very heroic and with the silver and gold armour this would automatically make the audience know which side is fighting for good or evil, The evil side are wearing leather and stone and they don’t look hygienic this is used very well because this would be what the audience would imagine a evil fantasy person to look like with the sharp edged teeth and blue and green skin it will always make the audience know what side they are fighting for. The lighting in this scene is very dark and gloomy this would show to the audience that this is war and it serious and death is upon them. The body language of the evil side are all positioned in an anger state were they are all angry and ready for war. On the good side it shows that they are thing orders because they are all in a straight line and one person without the helmet looks like he is giving the orders to the other soldiers. The bow and arrows are props in this scene this will show they are here to kill the opposite team, just after the commander gives the order to fire the arrows you hear a loud noises of them hitting the enemy this is digetic sound because you can hear and see them moving through the air and hitting the enemies this is used to make it sound it has killed many of the enemies. When the both teams charge to each other yyou can hear the footsteps hard in the ground this could show to the enemy it the last chance they have got and it is going to happen now it also shows how many people are actually in the battleground it is like a thunder storm marching through the battleground this would show how many people are in the battleground and how many are charging against each other. The whole scene goes silent and the footsteps of Sauron flood the screen this shows he is noticeable and everyone has stopped to look at him it shows a reverse-shot-reverse on the army commander and Sauron this would show the cause of tension in this scene you don’t see Saurins face at first but you see the ring on his finger this is used because they assume the audience already know who Sauron is and that he has got possession of the ring, they have also used this as a POV shot to show that the army is small compared to Sauron and these have to look up at him to see his face because these are small compared to Sauron, Sauron is only walking towards the army with his sword in his hand this could show that he knew the ring was going to cause war and he should be ready for it. There is a crane shot used when looking over Sauron’s shoulder at the men stood beneath him this would show that Sauron dominates them, the crane shot is used to make him look bigger than the rest and that they should look up to him because the power he holds, It then cuts to the ring this would show that this ring has caused the mayhem and that is what the army have come to do destroy and take it.
