Memento Presentation script
Presentation script: Genre
Projector- Black and white scenes show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZySV1_YoGUQ
Presenter- “The flashback scenes and the chronological scenes employ black and white lighting”Memento enforces the film noir genre, in this black and white scene he enforces the feeling of mystery because he is giving unanswered questions for what he has done in the past. “The use of lighting, colours, costumes, props and the set in general has strong film noir roots”The lighting used in this scene I have chosen creates shadows reaching across the room over Leonards body this made me think that maybe he has an alter ego which he doesn’t know about, this reinforces the feeling of mystery and not knowing how he has got there.“Film noir is not measure by its conventions but by the mood and feeling”
Projector-Black and white image of Leonard and his tattoos
Presenter- Leonard is a walking memory for himself which constantly reminds him of the recent actions that he had previously done, the tattoos on his body show a form of mystery and superstition to the audience because they don’t know what his intention was to get these tattoos and neither does he this forms this mood of not knowing what he is doing to do next because he doesn’t neither due to his AMD. We the audience are constantly expecting answers to questions How did he cut his cheek? Who is Leonard talking to on the phone? Why has he got the specific tattoo and what does it mean? This is what the film noir genre is all about leaving all the questions that the audience is asking unanswered because it sets this mood that this could possibly answer their questions or it could lead to more unanswered questions. This creates suspense and anticipation within the audience and this is what keeps them wanting more of the film noir genre.
Projector-
Presenter-the poster shows that there is a picture within a picture this could mean many things, I think that it could mean that there is a memory within a memory and that Leonard cannot remember that he is taking these images. “Some Memories are best forgotten” this quote of the film poster could indicate that Leonard could be in danger due to his memories. It also looks as if he has forgot that the image has already been took and that he has took it again and he is relaying the same story over and over again.
Projector-
Presenter- The film noir genre leaves the audience open to what could happen next with each scene this enforces the convention of mystery, Whilst Leonard is on the phone the audience never knew who he was taking too this leaves the audience in suspicion to who is on the other end of the phone and why is he discussing all this information with him. “film noir is characterised by a certain anxiety over the existence and definition of masculinity and normality” The film noir genre gives you the anxiety that no other genre can give you this includes the feeling of What is to happen next and the audience constantly question themselves, What is going to happen next?, who is he on the phone to?, why has he got these tattoos?.
Projector- When Leonard takes picture of teddy
Presenter- When Leonard takes the image of Teddy it introduces the feeling of paranoia but not for the audience but for the Leonard because he knows that he isn’t going to remember who he is and whether they are friends or enemies. This enforces the feel of mystery on the audience because they are waiting on what Leonard is going to caption the photo as and why he has captioned it. “The bigger questions like why he killed Teddy or what he is town for are answered right at the end, thus creating a deeper sense of suspense and anticipation in the audience”
