Tekken 2010

Tekken

This article goes through and gives a few reasons why film adaptations of video games have such a hard time trying to be successful, it gives a few different points and it has been useful to me as it has made me think about more reasons as well. It talks about people who make the films don’t understand the games and relates this to comic book adaptations and the way that they only started to become successful as people with a better understanding started to make them. It helps me understand about that fact that there are different types of games with different kind of plots and that this is a problem when making it into a film as it is either to much of a complicated plot for a movie or it is to dull to keep audiences interested.

This scene in the movie has a lot of references to the game what people want to see in a film that is meant to be Tekken, it uses the select a fighter screens in the film as it does in the games that gives it a little feel like the game but you’re not the one that selects the fighter. There are a few differences like the fact they all use weapons and fight in front of a crowd, this changes the theme of Tekken and is just a way that the filmmakers has tried to fit every one in to the film. The characters are in it that are off the game and they have the same mise en scene as they do in the game and in the back ground we see he Tekken sign that it iconic for the games but again there is a big difference with the film and the game, in the game you get ownership over a character if they lose a fight then that’s your fault and you can choose who to control and win with them, the film is a passive experience while the games are actives as you control them and choose what you want.
However in the film you have to sit back and watch as different characters fight and you may agree or disagree with the out come but either way you can’t change it. This can annoy certain people as they may have a favorite character that might be left out or not used in a way the think they should. This is the problem with fighting style games being adapted into films, they have so many alternative endings that there isn’t one that every one will be happy with.
This specific type of game is a very hard one to adapt into a film because film need a narrative but in fighting games like Tekken it has a very weak narrative at not many people pay attention to, the reason for Tekken is to beat the other characters while the film needs the narrative. this is where big changes need to be made between the two.
