Alien
The start of the scene and
throughout all of the shots it is low key lighting and very dim just how it
would be if you were one of the characters, making us feel as unprepared and in
the dark, literally, as them.
As one of the characters crawls through
the tunnel there is the key light shining on his face, which means we can see
his face and his expression, but we cannot see what is behind him or
surrounding him so anything could be there, much like an enigma code. While he makes
his way through the tunnel he carries a torch of fire, which connotes the
danger he is in.
Also throughout there is flashing
lights, much like a siren or alarm, which really reinforces the danger and
tells us that something is wrong.
When the surprise of the scene appears
and the light shines onto the alien, this is a huge shock for the audience and
character. Which we can tell from the change of the low key lighting and just
the key light on the characters face, it then goes very fast and suddenly to
the aliens face which is a big juxtaposition between how dark it was to then
how light it is which shows how the situation has changed. The sudden light change not only shows the
alien to shock us but obviously brightens the screen for the audience and
shocks their eyes just as much as the alien.
