Film Review: Fellowship of the Ring

Film Title: Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

Plot outline:
A simple hobbit is taken from his hum-drum life at Bag-end and thrust into a world of orcs, wizards, elves and dark lords. To prevent the destruction of all that he loves he must set on a journey to the distant land of Mordor where he must destroy the One Ring before it lands in the hands of the Dark Lord Sauron.

Cast:
Elijah Wood: Frodo Baggins
Ian Mckellen: Gandalf
Viggo Mortensen: Aragorn
Sean Bean: Boromir
Sean Austin: Samwise “Sam” Gamgee
Ian Holm: Bilbo Baggins
John Rhys-Davies: Gimli
Billy Boyd: Pippin
Dominic Monaghan: Merry
Orlando Bloom: Legolas
Christopher Lee: Saruman

My Opinion:
In my opinion I believe that the film done incredibly well. From the very beginning you could understand the relationships between the characters. Also this film is able to get emotional reactions from the audience, be it the comical antics of Merry and Pippin or the heart-breaking moments of grief after the fall of Gandalf the Grey from the Bridge of Khazad-dum. I believe that for a production made in 2000-2001 the special effects are incredible, one example of spectacular CGI in this film is the Balrog of Morgoth.

What doesn’t work?
In the book from which this film is based upon, the love story between Aragorn and Arwen is introduced and is a large part of Aragorn’s personal journey throughout the series but is, unfortunately, barely even in this film. This I believed made it harder for the producers and director to make the second and third movies as it plays a large in the books. Also many characters where downplayed or even omitted from the adaption completely leaving a lot to be desired.

Over all I believe that the film was successful as it followed the storyline very well without interweaving plot lines from other books in the series and it portrayed the characters very well and so was very close to the book.

Rating:
I give this film 5 rings out of 5

  1. This is a sound review but you must use expand your analysis and include all areas of the guide you have been given. You must consider the reasons why directors change films that are based on existing work. Do you think the inclusion of a larger love story between Aragorn and Arwen would have improved the film? YOu have raised some good points and there is some critical analysis here.
