SHUTTER ISLAND (2010) - MYSTERY/THRILLER
Shutter Island starts off with two detectives, Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is a World War Veteran and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo), who are on their way to Boston's Shutter Island Mental Hospital. Not only have they been assigned to investigate the disappearance of a mentally unstable patient, Rachel Solando, but Teddy wanted to come to the Island for personal issues - An inmate in there burned down his house and murdered his wife. Teddy's investigating skills provide a promising lead which are then crushed after being denied to the records by the Head Doctor so he decided to quit the case after having no leads. An unfortunate hurricane cuts off communication to the mainland and stops Teddy from returning, forcing him to stay on the case. As Teddy uncovers doubtful clues, he questions everything a little more - his memory, his family, even his sanity.
Overall, I find this film to be a confusing experience which keeps the viewers wrapped up in it's story line and questioning things along side Teddy. Leonardo DiCaprio plays an important role as Teddy, he captions the confusion in the story very well. Many have said this is DiCaprio's best performance up-to-date, which in my opinion is correct, his character grows in parallel to the unveiling plot twists.
To conclude, Shutter Island is one of my Top Five Films and deserves to be there, between Leonardo DiCaprio's magnificent performance in the mysterious psycho plot and the fantastic ending, this film is a must see in my opinion. On this occasion it is best to watch this film twice to pick up on the clues to the actual ending, which is an un-guessable great twist on the story which leaves the viewers shocked. '4.4/5 Stars'.
