How significant is the 'News Crews' scene to our understanding of the messages and values of La Haine?
The sene opens with the three boys sitting in a closed in park. a few seconds into the scene, Kassovitz uses a jump cut, to show the passing of a lengthy period of time without any change to the boys or their surroundings. The boys begin to engage in small talk, as a news crew drives past the top of the enclosed park they're sitting in.
The news crew drives past the park before reversing back to talk to the trio, and it is clear that they were driving through the area looking for a scoop. the crew do not get out of the car, potentially showing fear of the projects, given the recent riots. The first question the news reporter asks the three boys is "did you break anything?". This assumed involvement in the riots shows the stereotype the French media hold of immigrants, suggesting that because they are of a different culture, they must have been involved. This stereotype strongly links back to the quote from Djamelia Sonzogni, a green party MP, who is quoted to have said "unless you are blonde haired and blue eyed in France, you will always be suspected of something."
