Peter Shock ROTK Analysis

The Lord Of The Rings starts with a wide shot of Frodo entering the cave the wide shot shows the tight tunnel entrance making Frodo look confined and trapped with the only light source being a blue gloomy glow this represents an unnatural and creepy feeling to the scene, despite the light the rest of the cave is flooded with darkness giving the audience the question, what is hiding in the shadows? Adding fear to the scene as Frodo is walking into the unknown. Throughout this clip there is a dim light with the odd burst of a bright blue glows, making sure that we constantly know that this is not a pleasant place to be and whatever lurks in these caves are not gentle or friendly.

In the second shot you get a shot of Frodo gingerly entering the cave and getting further away from where he entered and further away from any easy escape and at this point is enveloped by the dark. As the camera is tracking backwards Frodo moves forward it gives the audience the feeling that the walls are closing in and he is becoming more and more restricted physically bust also mentally because as the walls are growing closer he is becoming a lot more confused and dazed adding that vulnerability to him and taking away any chances of him getting a quick escape if he needed to, so its as if the director is preparing him to be attacked and taken. The third shot just backs up this at feeling of confinement as he goes to a wide at has the tunnel hole centre shot, giving the illusion that it is small.

The fourth shot is a being film from the P.O.V of Frodo, this is giving the audience a closer relationship with the character and helps them understand what Frodo is feeling, in this certain shot what he is feeling would be fear because as he is getting further into the cave his is discovering more unusually things, for instants in this shot the wall almost look tomb like also wet and slimy as the gloomy light glistens of the cave walls.

The fifth shot is showing us that Frodo is started to become so engulfed buy this cave that regardless of whether he wanted to go back he couldn’t adding onto this it would make it seem as though it was a trap. This shot also gives us the first sights of web signifying that there could be some kind of spider not yet specified of what size or how many, so that leaves the audiences wondering what has created these webs as he makes his way into the ‘supernatural’ light.

Shot six gives us our first certainty that there is something lurking in those caves, this is shown when you go to the P.O.V of Shelob, you know this is Shelob because of the unnatural movement of the camera and its unsteady filming motion this is giving the audience privileged information because they know something which Frodo does not and this is that Frodo is in certain danger. Then sharply switching to the seventh shot, where it is not so dark and is giving us more visibility of Frodo and the creature lurking in the dark more visibility.

In Shot 8 Frodo is coming into a mid-shot from a low angle signifying that there is something below Frodo, this is made even more clear as Frodo is in the background which is being is in focus and the foreground is out of focus, making the audience wonder what the item is that is out of focus so when going to shot 9 this dynamic switches and the background goes out of focus in the foreground in focus, presenting us with some type of skeleton hinting that this could be a possible future of Frodo’s and just adding to that already scary theme of the clip.

The tenth shot is on of Frodo moving away from the light and into the darkness this signifying that he is moving from safety to danger. The Eleventh scene shows another P.O.V of Shelob but its view is obscured by a wall suggesting that he is hiding from Frodo whilst it waits for its perfect chance to attack.

The twelve shot starts straight away with tracking straight toward him showing that realisation that this is in fact a trap.
