La Haine: Boxing and shooting scene.
The first thing seen when entering the gym is the two fighters. They are ethnic minorities fighting each other, a possible comment upon how the French got the ethnicities to fight each other during the French-Algerian war (The Black feet tribe in particular). Music is played whilst they fight each other The music isn't that of French culture however, but more towards the African minorities, with the bongo drum beat. Boxing, commonly seen as a sport for the working class which is commented upon once again by the use of the ethnic fighters, is part of the underclass culture. This shows how those who live in the projects have accessed certain parts of the French culture, held by the working class. Once Vinz walks in a tracking shot is used, similar to that of how it were used when in the projects. This is highlighted to show Vinz is back in his comfort zone, with his equal peers. Once he sits down, a point of view shot is used, one of five throughout the film, to show how Vinz has realised how even within ethnic groups there is a conflict and how they've been divided between themselves. We then see Vinz reaction towards the realisation of this.
He then leaves the gym with people he knows from there. They are seen directly driving a car they have by unknown means. THe car is blasting hip-hop, once again highlighting the adopted surrogate culture, but the lyrics are that of the problems of the working class, something they can relate with. Kassovitz has also used this scene to show how they're passing the time once again.
They arrive outside a club, in which they have been rejected by the bouncer. One of the members seen within this group, regards the bouncer as being black, judging him upon his appearance whilst being black themselves, once again showing the divisions within the underclass Vinz had realised prior. One of the group then proceeds to walk towards the door and kill the bouncer. The shot shows the killing, as well as Vinz reaction to the situation, that of shocked and horrified. He couldn't handle the killing which further reinforces his vulnerability. Within the projects when someone was killed he was for it, but within the city centre he is out of his comfort zone because he is out of the projects, and that danger is everywhere.
