How significant are genre and narrative to your understand of your focus films? The genre of the film LA Haine is Social Realist and Crime this is seen in the film by showing the generic conventions of the Crime genre which is Drugs and Guns, During the film when Vinz has the opportunity to kill a skinhead but he chooses not to this can be seen as Social realist because the characters all have a conscience and this shows they all have morals, this is the reason why Vinz decided not to shoot but then he threw up to the thought of killing someone. The film was inspired by a real case study, which happened in the hands of the police, Mokome M’Bowole was a project from France who died from a gun shot which was accidently shot by the police man. This happened to 300 other people in France, which was all “accidental”. City of Gods Genres is Crime this can be seen in the film due to the amount of gun crime and death in the film. During the film there are many deaths and this is seen as a typical day for the city of Rio. Lil zè is seen as this big drug lord who lives in the crime world because with the title on Drug lord it gives more power and different opportunities to him this would be such things like get the women he wants and the control of the Favela. You see Lil zè’s rise to the top in getting what he wants out of the drug lord job but towards the end of the film you see his life going down hill and it ends when he gets shot due to his rivalry between Knockout Ned and Carrot. During the document showing the life of criminals in the Rio favela it showed to young children who have took the life as a criminal and they knew by taking this route they would end up dead this shows that they know were they will end up if they carry on with the life they are taking. • You don’t see the strict line between Rich vs Poor • In LA Haine you see the difference between the estate which they live on and Abdel and Vinz are killed in the hands of the police and they are just 2 of the 300 who were killed by the police.
