Compare how key messages and values are explored in the two American Films you have studied in reflecting the period they were made
Genre
In the sense of genre both WOTW and ITOBS perfectly represent Sci-fi but how it does it is impressive.
WOTW
In WOTW they use a lot of the conventions of Sci-fi and relate it to real life at the same time for example they use the outsiders to represent the terrorists that invaded America and destroyed the Twin towers this was so that the people watching the movie could easily relate to the film. Also the iconography to represent what type of genre it was for example using Steven Speilberg for the director and this is because he is known for a lot of films but is especially known for Sci-fi films. Also the use of the codes and conventions of Sci-fi films are used brilliantly here because we have first of all Aliens which are in near enough every Sci-fi films ever made. They have futuristic weaponry because if the Aliens where to use lets says helicopters instead on Tripods I do not think the intimidation would be as great. Also like in most films the outsiders are invading not to make peace but to destroy the world and have it for themselves for example this happens in The Matrix and Star wars.IOTBS
In IOTBS the use of sci-fi genre is a little bit more subtly done but done nether the less one use of the sci-fi genre is the what if scenario. This is represented int this because the pod people invade a small city and take over and it makes us think what if they take over the whole world and this is done for the genre but also to represent Mcarthy as this is what people were thinking in those times. Also they use the fear of annihilation to their advantage because the pod people are starting to take over this is again ti represent Mcarthy but also because it is not a Sci-fi film without an invasion form the Aliens.
Narrative
WOTW
In WOTW they have a pretty simple storyline Alines invade Aliens die because of bacteria and Ray's ex wife has got her daughter back while Ray gets to see Robbie again. But the important thing about this film is that it has a resolution and this is because it is showing no matter how hard times get the Americans are always going to survive and make it through the situation. Next Binary oppositions now the main binary opposition in the film is good vs evil and this is shown by the humans being good fighting off the outsiders (terrorists) which are evil as you might guess and this is to represent 9/11 because it is saying you might have attacked first but in the end the good will win the evil will fail (terrorists). The protagonist in this film is Ray and throughout the whole film all he is trying to do is fight for survival for him and his family. The antagonists (terrorists) do not care about anyone else but themselves and that is why they are invading.
