How important are film
franchises for audiences and producers?
When it comes to film franchises these are
very important to producers and this is because franchises have the potential
to save a company or if they are a big company they have the potential to make
a company even bigger.
Now a movie out of a franchise is not the
end of that company making money that is if the franchise becomes big if the
franchise becomes big you then have the option to make merchandise to go with
the films. Now this is where the bulk of the money comes from and that is
because there are a lot of different types of merchandise that producers are
able to make that might be for example games, aftershave, cups the list can go
on and on. The actual word for what this tactic is called is synergy. Another
reason franchises are good for producers is that if the franchise does become
big it can mean that the company producing it can make a name for themselves in
the industry and end having more people seeing their movies meaning they earn
more money which in turn means that can make bigger better movies and more
movies because they will have more money meaning they can give movies bigger
budgets making the movie better well that is the idea. While franchises can
make producers they can also break producers if the franchise is not a great
one fortunately for Disney they are a massive company who have established
themselves because the have had a couple of franchises fail in the past couple
of years and that is John Carter and The Lone Ranger. John Carter did earn
about 280 million dollars, which for a medium sized company with a medium sized
budget would be good. But the production budget for the film was 250 million
and probably the same for the marketing budget so it lost about 220 million
dollars, which for a few companies would put them out of business.
Franchises are not only good for producers
but are also good for the audiences and this is because franchises if good have
the potential to create emotional bonds with people that stick with them
forever. If it becomes big for example it can become a social experience for
the fans and this is because if a group of friends really like the film they
could make plans to see everyone of the films when they first come out till
they finish one example of people doing this is the Harry Potter films. Also
franchises can in a good way take over peoples lives and actually make their
lives a lot more enjoyable. This is because they might start thinking of
references to the franchise they really like when they see something for
example thinking of agent Smith when seeing someone in a black suit. Also it
might be one of the only good things about someone’s life say because they are
getting bullied in school for example. So film franchises can have the ability
to make people a lot happier and make them forget about the rest of the world
around them whether that world is good or bad.
In conclusion franchises can mean make or
break for a company because they are able to earn hundreds of millions of dollars
or the films might even reach the billions and if they do that means it has
been a massive success and can earn money from merchandise. Also franchises are
able to be just as important to audiences as they can help people get out of
bad situations and just lose themselves they can even help people make new
friendships that could last for years and years.
