The film was later released on 19th December 1971 in the US and the 13th January 972 in the UK, and was rated X in it’s original release in the U.S. Author Anthony Burgess initially distrusted Kubrick as a director, but was happy with the results. He felt the film later made the book, one of his least favourite books he had written, overshadow his other work.
Warner Bros at the request of Kubrick, one of the reasons for withdrawing the movie in the UK was that, he and his family received several death threats because of the film. After the film was pulled it was difficult to watch ‘A Clockwork Orange’ in the UK, but came back into public hands following Kubrick’s death in 1999, as cinemas began to reshow the film.
