How important is marketing to a films success or failure at the box office?
Marketing is very important to a films success is is probably one of the main things to a films success if not the most important and this is because if you don't market a film well not many people are going to end up hearing of it meaning if it was the best film ever made but no one heard of it the producers of the film would not make their money back.
One example of a film that was not great but was not marketed well is John Carter and one reason that this film failed so much at the box office is that all the marketing gave mixed perceptions about what the film was because one poster makes the film look like a period film that has action in another poster makes John Carter look like a sequel to the movie 300 and the two posters that make it look like a fantasy movie which it is give inconsistent perceptions about where the film is set and who the bad guys are what are the genres of the film basically the posters tell us nothing about the film. Also the trailers had the exact same problem because it made the bad guys in the film good guys then bad guys again it did not tell us which planet they where on all we knew is that the film was not set on Earth we do not know how the main character John Carter got to the foreign planet or anything and we do not know who any of the characters are.
