The Differences Between Indie and Mainstream films
While creating any film, it is important to understand your target
audience.
However, there is a major difference when it comes to indie and
mainstream films.Indie films are usually created to tell a personal
story based on real events or to get a certain view point across to the
audience where as blockbusters such as Avatar are mainly created to
generate a great amount of revenue.
Indie films are usually more artistic, though that fact is often overshadowed by their smaller budgets and lack of upscale production facilities. This can have all sorts of effects on the film. For exmple because the creator of the film 'Clerks' didn't have alot of money to fund the film the cast mainly consisted ofhis friends and mutual friends therefore the film consisted of a small cast and focused on their character development. Also there were no well known or 'mainstream actors' in the film because of the budget that was primarily funded by the producers personal savings. Also the funding restrictions effected the setting and led to the film being shot in and around the small store were the producer worked at the time. The final thing the producer did to save on costs was to shoot the film in black and white however some who argue that this was done to highlight the films artistic values and overall feel.
Hollywood or mainstream pictures usually have all the technological effects and glitzy "tricks of the trade" to draw in viewers, while indies are largely responsible for their own success through the basics of quality filmmaking. In addition, mainstream films also include enormous advertising budgets, while indies are normally limited in their promotional efforts.A good example of this would be the box office hit 'Avatar' Which had a large advertising campaign in order to generate 'hype' and give the audience a good perception of the film that they would go out and see it. Also unlike an indie film Avatar contains a range of well known actors (Such as Michelle Rodriguez) this done so that the film will generate a bigger audience because they might enjoy the other films that the actors have starred in.
