The spectator’s alignment and allegiance is strained here when Alex
is receiving the ‘Ludovico Treatment’. The very fact that the equipment Alex is
wearing is visually uncomfortable signifies an eerie and uneasy feel to this
scene from the start. The first two films contain the sex and violence that we
ourselves have seen from Alex. He takes pleasure in watching this at first. The
spectator again participates, with the close up solely focused on the screen
that the films are being shown on.
Once Alex begins to feel the effects of the treatment, the camera
switches to close ups of his face, experiencing pain as the films continue. The
spectator and Alex is being punished here as the dues are being paid from participating
in the ultra violent acts of women. We share the experience with Alex due to
alignment.
