During the treatment scene, how is the spectator punished?

During the scene in which Alex is receiving treatment, we are forced to experience the emotions and feelings he is experiencing because we are so well aligned with him. Due to the fact we have adopted a similar frame of mind as Alex, we enjoy watching the 'viddies' at the beginning because Alex is initially content in watching them.  However, as the scene develops we see Alex losing the enjoyment due to the feelings of nausea he's getting and the spectator begins to feel uncomfortable watching Alex in pain and so, the spectator feels uncomfortable watching the videos. As the doctor looks into the camera discussing the different things Alex is enduring through the treatment such as 'death like paralysis', it is as though he's speaking out to the audience and it's clear then that Kubrick is attempting to show that the spectator is being punished for aligning with Alex and enjoying the same things he does.

We feel distressed when Alex begins losing himself to the treatment as we feel lost because the person we have aligned with is being forced to change and has lost the happiness in his life. We want Alex to feel that happiness and so are disturbed by his loss of identity and therefore, we are taking the journey through 'A Clockwork Orange' with him and as he would experience the darker times, we do too.
