Home invasion scene
During ‘Home Invasion’ how is spectator implicit in the attack?
During the home invasion scene we as a spectator are made to see these attacks, although they are violent we still want to know what happens next to victim as well as Alex. Laura Mulveys The Male gaze theory states that Women are used for erotic objects for the characters in the film and for the spectator as a result of this women are seen as objects and not signifying real women. Often the women are fetishised for the male’s perspective. When the doorbell goes the husband looks at the wife to show she should answer it, this proves how women are seen as objects. Kubrick uses many different Point of view shots during the home invasion scene because we see the same perspective as the husband who is on the floor when his wife is getting raped. When Alex is cutting the wife’s clothes of he does it in a prolonged way because we see her as an erotic object, this is shown by using numerous extreme close ups of her and her body.
According to Laura Mulveys theory women are used in films for men an this scene can show this because when Alex starts to cut her clothes of he starts with the breasts then cuts it from the middle its shown like this to please men. Women are used in this to be controlled and used as objects, when she says no to let Alex and the group into the house the husband says she should open the door she correspond straight away with no argument this provides proof how women are used and controlled within films therefore proving Laura Mulveys theory.
