Ludovico Treatment

During the treatment sequence how is the spectator punished?

From the very beginning of 'A Clockwork Orange' we are aligned with Alex, we are forced into his mind frame through his on going narration and therefore align with him as he is the only point of reference. Due to us making this instant alignment with Alex we join him in his acts of violence and are then punished with him and must share his feelings. Whilst Alex is being punished for his actions in the treatment sequence we are punished in the same ways. Similar to Alex, we find everything to be less enjoyable in this sequence, as he finds watching rape and violence less enjoyable. We are ultimately being punished for taking part in watching the previous scenes when we have watched Alex commit violence towards women. Both the spectator and Alex are both in this scene being denied of the pleasure of the images they're watching.
