Representation of Women in Get Carter

In the film ‘Get Carter’, there are three main women in which the film focuses on throughout. These women are Glenda, Edna and Anna, all of whom are linked with the movies protagonist, Jack Carter in some way.

The first women we see in the film is Anna in a male dominated scene, in which they are all watching pornography and being overall, degrading towards women in general. The scene is mainly in place to set the story of the film which is Carter travelling to Newcastle, but integrated into this is a shot of Anna sitting uncomfortably, being harassed by one of the men in the room. The camera angles in this scene are very important as they are in charge of what the audience see’s, with this in mind, while watching the seen you notice that whenever a man is on camera, the camera is at a regular mid-angle shot so that the audience can clearly see most or all of him without any distractions and we get the full insight into what he has to stay or do. This is completely juxtaposed with the camera angles when women are on screen. In the first seen we see one of the men in the room move his hand to place on Anna’s leg, whilst he is moving his hand, the camera stays trained on it so that the first shot we get of Anna is her leg before the camera slowly pans up to her face, rather than showing her body all in one.

The second time wee see Anna is when Carter is on the phone to her initiating phone sex, despite Edna being in the same room. The shots of Anna are arguably unnecessary for the impact of this scene, but are purposely put into the film for the sole purpose of attracting the ‘male gaze’.
