In Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema Laura Mulvey states that,

"The presence of woman is an indispensable element of spectacle in normal narrative film, yet her visual presence tends to work against the development of a storyline, to freeze the flow of action"

This is challenged in Disneys Brave in which Merida's hand in marriage is the prize in an archery competition, at the start of this scene she is there as the prize to be won, to be looked at however she is pushing the narrative forward as the men are competing for Merida.
She completely changes this as she puts herself forward showing all the men up and winning the competition. This goes against Laura Mulvey's theory as she is not 'freezing the flow of action ' she is pushing the narrative forward causing the storyline forward.
