"I could kiss you bitch":"race, gender and sexuality in Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2: Apocalypse

By Stephen Harper

In the first two Resident Evil movies women blatantly sexualised "promotional materials depicted a sultry Milla Jovoich in a cocktail dress and black knee-length boots wielding an enormous weapon." This shows right from the outset that the producers of the movie are trying to draw people into the movie by sexualising a person that was back then considered one of the sexiest people alive.

They also do this with Jill Valentine in Resident evil 2 and this is mainly through the use of the camerawork because Jill is dressed in her costume from the games a mini skirt and a blue tube top but. "camerawork is also important in fetishizing the (white female characters)" Jill by showing us the shot of her naked legs first while she walks into a Racoon city police station. "The initial sequence is shot from a low angle to capture Jill's buttocks and legs as she shimmies towards the police station. In both films, the camera frequently tracks heroines from behind, fetishizing their little bodies." This quote here is perfect to what the films are doing in my opinion and I agree with this quote having seen both films this is done quite a lot in these films.
