Dr Peter Byrne with help from Sue Baker of Time to Change tackle misgiving of mental health problems within films. The stigma attached to people with mental health problems is 'centuries old' and it 'crosses every national boundary and every culture.' As a society 'our understanding of mental health problems… comes from many sources- real-life experiences, printed literature, in news media and characters in drama and film.'
Depictions of mental health problem in the early years was mainly in comedy and used themes of '"escaped lunatic on the loose."' Nowadays films need 'drama and conflict' and so the people with mental illness are portrayed to be more 'extreme' and if 'the drama is resolved' it will happen 'quickly and in an idealised way: cured by falling in love and dark secrets revealed.'
