Presenter: The presentation I am abut to show you is about the way women are represented in superhero films in the modern day.
Throughout the years of film we have had a lot of superhero films (X-men, Superman, Super girl, Batman e.t.c) but in this presentation I am going to show the ways in which woman have changed throughout the years but also the ways in which we are still in the dark age when it comes to women in superhero films. Throughout the years we have had the typical the typical women in superhero films that have been prizes for the Superman or Batman for example these women have been portrayed by men for prizes for men even when the women no nothing about them or the men don't they have needed the help from the men to save them for example Mary Jane the early 2000's spider man films. But have things really changed to this day well in this presentation we are going to find out whether things have are not so please sit down and enjoy.
[Give out handouts about recent superhero movies and the cast in them and what are the main roles]
[On the presentation it switches to a page about Mary Jane in the early 2000's Spider Man movies]
[Ask the audience to switch to page three of their booklets]
Presenter: Now on this page we have a page about Mary Jane in the early 2000's movies that shows how she is weak in the spider man movies. In Spider Man 1 she is getting mugged in the ally way and Spider Man comes in a saves the day and then because she is his love interest he gets his reward of kissing his love interest. But the thing that shows Mary Jane's weakness is the dialogue she uses after being saved "Can I say thank you this time" and then she perceives to kiss Spider Man to thank him to say thank you this shows that she is just used for sexuality reasons and this shows she is just a love interest and prize for Spider Man she is the typical Damsel in distress. Next in Spider Man 2 another scene where Mary Jane gets rescued when Peter Parker and Mary Jane are talking in the cafe when Doc Octopus throws a car throw the window which is yes going for Peter Parker but Mary Jane is sitting next to him. But instead of Mary Jane throwing herself at Peter to save him it is the other way round which agains shows her weakness in the film because all she is thinking about before the car comes through the window is love and she is actually trying to kiss Peter at the time when the car comes through the window. So once again Peter Parker is the hero saving Mary Jane's life whereas Mary Jane is again Damsel in Distress being saved by Peter Parker. Finally in Spider-Man 3 Mary Jane is again in trouble this is right towards the end when Sandman, Venom, Spider man and Green Goblin are all fighting. But this scene is very stupid and sexist this is because it looks like Spider man and Green Goblin are trying to defeat the villains to save everyone from the danger but in actual fact they are very masculine and are trying to fight for the love of the very feminist woman (Mary Jane). So this means again Mary Jane is just the love interest for the heroes but what makes this scene even more sexist is that the Villains are also fighting for the love of Mary Jane because she is a love interest for the villains. We see this especially when Venom picks up Mary Jane for the taxi and says "My Spider sense is tingling if you know what I mean." This shows Venom is acknowledging that he thinks Mary Jane is very nice looking and that she is a love interest for the villains. Eventually Mary Jane is saved from the fight from the one and only Spider-Man so the hero finally wins his love interest. These three scenes show how weak women are represented in the early 2000's Spider-Man films so have things really changed in the Superhero films next we will look at Black Widow in the marvel universe.
[After I finish about talking about each scene in the Spider-Man section I will show the scene to make my point even more]
[I will then switch to a page about Black widow and three of the movies she has been in]
[Ask the audience to switch to page six in their booklets]
Presenter: Now on this page we have the page about Black Widow a.k.a Scarlett Johansson and the movies she has been in first of all Iron Man 2 in this film she is seen as very strong and the reason I would say she is very strong is because. In this movie Black Widow is undercover for most of the film and is able to fool everyone around her including the very strong Iron Man this in someways makes Black Widow stronger than the protagonist himself. Also a scene in Iron man 2 shows how strong Black Widow this is the scene when Black Widow and Happy Hogan break into Hammer and Black Widow takes out 10 male guards while Happy Hogan and male takes out 1 male guard. This shows how strong she is when she can take out 10 people out of the supposedly stronger sex. In this scene at least her strength, Athleticism and intelligence makes her a strong hero than and sexualised Damsel in distress. One more thing that shows Black Widow is not sexualised in this scene is that the camera focuses on the top half of her body with medium close-ups and close-ups of her face which shows that she has a lot of intelligence and is more than just sexualised woman because this scene never focuses on her body in this scene but her intelligence. Next I am going to talk about Black Widow in the movie The Avengers In the scene where Black Widow is talking to Loki while Loki is in his cell she uses her intelligence to fool him. (Expand on this)
