Key scene 2 – Hubert in his house & DJ scene
Straight away we notice there is no male role model within the house. We also notice the role he plays within the house. Through his sister asking him to help her with her work, and also through him paying his mum for bills. This adds the realism and shows the need for Hubert within the family. Almost as though his mum and sister rely on him solely for money and also a male figure in the house. The overall meaning of no male role model, suggests the underlining meaning that they are brought up in an environment with nobody to guide them down the route they should take. Hubert is a representation to almost all of the citizens in the projects, including Vinz, however we know Saied has a male role model (older brother). Therefore the ending resulting in both Vinz and Hubert' deaths reflects this idea that there upbringings affect hugely the decisions they make and the path they are destined to take.
We are positioned to see Hubert from very close when he is preparing his drugs. This suggests the director wanted us to feel close to him therefore take initial sides with him, as a result we are able to accept the fact he is preparing drugs and still see him as a protagonist and more of a victim of his environment, which we gather from the previous scene with the fact his family rely on him. We also notice how he how he hides his drugs, suggesting he is ashamed of the fact he sells drugs.
When he inhales the drugs we see him in a low angle shot, which is framed to show him seemingly 'getting high' and the poster behind him trapped within the frame directly behind him. The poster behind him is Muhammed Ali, who is a huge icon of the world and figure many people ook up to. However Ali has deeper meaning, in that during his time of fame and boxing he rejected to be called his slave name and reverted to muslim changing his name in the process. This is a key message in the film which is represented through a non-french figure, in that he represents rejection from his society and chose not to treated as any less. This represents Hubert to some extent, such that he obviously represents the segment of rejection from french society as does everyone else in the project, but also he represents the clever headed person that Ali was, and also that he saw the bigger picture which everybody else in he project is blind to. We see this point in the POV shot of him looking over everybody from his window, representing again that he is fully aware of his environment and understands there is no escape unlike the Vinz who's ego drives him to believe that he can take a difference. Further this relates t the man falling from a building quote that Hubert says, in that he is aware that there is no escaping the environment and it is just a matter of time before society comes crashing and repeats itself, which in this films case is repeated through endless cycle via the death of Vinz at the end of the film.
