"Explore how stylistic choices of the director contribute to the representation of the urban environment in the film you have studied for this topic."


The director has chosen very different stylistic choices in order to represent Brazil in it's different time periods. For example towards the start of the film when the City of God was first created the stylistic choices are very different than the end of the film were we see the city turned into an all out war zone. For example the lighting within the first part of the film is a very gold-ish colour and the environment is very spacious and open, this is juxtaposed by the very bleak colour scheme and confined shots towards the end of the film. This stylistic choice has been chosen to show how the city has evolved over time and has turned into a drug and violence filled confined slum that it is today.
