In what ways can War of the
Worlds be considered post 9/11 cinema?
War of the worlds can be considered post 9/11 in many ways.
For example when looking at the aliens tripods the camera is usually looking up
at them, this is a visual signifier of 9/11 as the majority of footage of the
event is from a low angle looking up at the attacks. When the tripod surfaces
from the ground the people near it do not run away at first until it starts to
attack, this is how people responded to the first plane hitting one of the
world trade centres buildings as people stood and thought it was merely and
accident until the second plane hit and they realised it was not an accident.
At that point people began to panic and run away. When the aliens attack the
civilians they turn into grey ash, this is an allegory for the ash that covered
the civilians during 9/11 when the buildings came down. Although it is stated that all electrical
devices had been shut down due to an EMP there is a man using a camcorder to
record the tripod, this is allegoric of people recording the events of 9/11.
