War Of The Worlds
War Of The Worlds can be considered as allegorical due to the change in the setting of the alien invasion, and how it shows the changing effect the alien invasion has on society depending on the time zone.
In the original novel written in 1898 reflects how at the time people felt a threat of complete annihilation and a end to the world, also the fear of others being immigrants coming into England due to the fact at the time it was the biggest country owning 2/3's of the world but that made it a target for a war and people became wary that countries England owned at the time could have come together and rised and cam together and started a war. This is reflected in the film due to the aliens representing immigrants coming to a country and taking over the world and wanting to completely annihilate the human race all together. The Novel is set in London due to it being the capital city of the biggest country at the time.
The Radio show in 1938 reflects how at the time it was made people had a fear of a uprise of the Nazis in their plan for world domination which Hitler promised, this led to World War Two which people were fearing as it could potentially happen at any time. War Of The Worlds changed to reflected current events in the world with the threat of world domination recurring with the uprise of Nazi Germany who Hitler had promised World domination. The Radio show remained set in London due to it being prepared for the day when Germany got together and invaded Poland.
The Film in 1953 was set during the cold war between Russia and America due to the US having used a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima and declaring to the World that they are the new super power and had the biggest and most powerful weapons, but Russia developed their own and due to the disagreement between the two on communism they began a cold war one threatening the other with the idea of destroying the others country. This created a real sense of paranoia as people saw it as a real threat and began to prepare themselves what what seemed to be all but certain a nuclear war. The film reflected this by making the aliens from 'The Red Planet', this reflects how the aliens are viewed in a negative way like the USSR were which is why they're from a red planet, the 'red' is what represent the USSR as their flag was red with yellow stars. Also the aliens try and annihilate the American society with new and advanced technology which is the same threat the US were under from the USSR at the time.
The film in 2005 is set in a more current time were paranoia has changed to something different and a different fear has taken over. Due to the rise of Islamic terror it began to become a big fear around the world, for example 911 and other planes that crashed during the same day created a real fear and terror because they became a real threat and the 911 attack and bombings that followed made people begin to realise and fear Islamic people because they have become stereotypically viewed and labeled as 'Terrorists'. These feelings and new ideologies were reflected in the film, for example it reflects how people have a fear of others when they fear the aliens. It also reflects how people react to life altering events like the way people acted after and during the 911 attack which is the same way people react when the aliens take over, which is this need to be around family and seek help from rescue services like the army and police.
