In what ways can War of the Worlds be considered Post 9/11 cinema?

There are many ways in which War of the Worlds can be considered Post 9/11 cinema. For example, in the film all the characters are looking up at the attack taking place, which is what happened during the 9/11 attack. This creates paranoia and fear as they don't know what or who it is and what is going to happen.

Spielberg uses a cam-corder to frame some of the attack, this is so we have a eye line match with the characters as they are watching it as well. This is significant as during 9/11 the majority of the footage shown worldwide is from a cam-corder as it was an unexpected attack.

When the first tripod attacks, the sound of it is the sound a planes jet engine starting up. This is an aural signifier as it reinforces the idea of the film being post 9/11.

The floor begins to crack and move as the alien comes up from the ground, this is a visual signifier of 9/11 as the twin towers had huge holes in them from the plane crash and then began to collapse.

The director decides to use grey dust instead of blood or another colour. This is significant as it represents the grey ash when the towers collapsed. He also shows clothes falling form the sky which reinforces the image of the clothes, files and people falling form the sky during the 9/11 attack.

Spielberg uses low angles for the majority of his shots, this is to illustrate the people looking up at the attacks from both 9/11 and the visual signifier of the alien attack in the film.

If something, such as an attack occurs people try to rationalise them to reduce their fear however when the attack gets worse, they irrationalise and become afraid.
