Film Star Case Study

Benicio Del Toro

Star qualities

  • Speak different languages.
  • Play lots of different characters.
  • Normally plays a comical character, but can also play a very serious character.
  • normally portrayed as some one from a different country.
  • stand alone movie star.

Gledhill theory

The theory states that people would like to see the 'real' star and the 'reel' star. I think that Del Toro does this. he has stated that he doesn't want a family, and when people ask why? he says, "why do i have to? just so i can get divorced?" showing the people, that he is a funny and lovable actor, but does not have much confidence for relationships. However he has also show that he can change, as a year after this statement he has had a child with Rod Stewart's daughter, Kimberly Stewart, and had it baptised in Puerto Rico. So, the 'reel' star is a comedic crazy character, and the 'real' star is a changed family man.

Ideologies

The majority of the characters that Benicio Del Toro plays are from different countries. It is strange that Del Toro has never played a Puerto Rican character even though Del Toro is Puerto Rican. In most of his movies, the characters are rogues. Druggies (Fear and loathing in Las Vegas), Alcoholics (Sin City), psychos (21 grams), thief's (snatch, Usual suspects), Revolutionary or Gorilla leader (Che), terror some werewolves(wolf man) and an intergalactic, evil powerful alien (Guardians of the Galaxy). However, Benicio Del Toro does not always play rogues. he has played good characters too, but he has mostly played rogues. so the ideologies that Del Toro represents are that people that are not American aren't as good as the good old American.
