How is the experience of shock created in in your chosen extract?
Pan's Labyrinth's Pale Man scene is shocking to me for multiple reasons. It starts with a close up Ofelia looking into the room and as the camera tracks back the sound of violins becomes more intense to be cut out abruptly by the sound of breathing. As Ofelia walks down the corridor and into the room all that the audience can hear is the pale man's breathing and the hourglass which reinforces the tense atmosphere. As she goes into the room there are close ups of paintings of the pale man eating children and in one corner a pile of children's shoes. After the fairies have helped her get what she needs she goes and eats grapes off the table, this shocks me as the Faun had previously told her not to eat anything as it will wake up the Pale Man. The fact she disregards the the Fauns warning shocks me the most as he is helping her save her brother and mother.
