Shocking Cinema- The Bear Jew (Inglorious Basterds)

The scene begins with Brad Pitts character Aldo Raine negotiating with a german official; information on German coordinates or getting beat to death with a club. what initially starts this scene of as being shocking is not the inevitable death by the hands of Donny 'The Bear Jew' Donowitz, but infact the politeness, respect and bravery of the German official, especially in a film made by Americans and centred around the events of World War II. We are so used to 'Nazi' films being made in a way that paints all nazi soldiers as barbaric killers, such as Amon Goeth in Schindlers List rather than soldiers just the same as any others but on an opposing side.

As soon as the German officer refuses to aid the basterds, a two hollow bangs are heard in the background of the scene, prompting Aldo Raine to explain the legacy of 'The Bear Jew', not necessarily to the officer, but more to give the audience an insight to this character and builds anticipation for his debut. The added input of a close up of a younger german soldier who looks terrified by the prospect adds to the tension slowly being built by Brad Pitts gravelly voice alongside the constant banging of a baseball bat in the background. After the officer once again refuses to help Brad Pitt and his 'Jew Dogs', igniting laughter from the rest of the basterds, the tone changes for a small amount of time from tense silence to humour.
Thats when the non diagetic music begins playing over these two factors, sending the scene into a frenzy and playing almost as a countdown to the inevitable death.
