From the beginning we see our main character; Jack Carter in a room full of fellow men and one woman, Anna. All the men in the room are sitting around and watching pornography, it shows women being dominated sexually by men and they seem to take amusement out of it. Showing straight from the get go that women are still only viewed as lesser beings in comparison to men. Later through the scene we see that Anna looks uncomfortable during a tracking shot where Jack's boss is feeling up her leg, we get the sense of her being uncomfortable as she's framed in a tight angle and seems disrupted. Following with a shot of Jack looking at her in a sensual way, but she continues to act passively about it and allows it to happen to her. This helps convey to the audience that she is being dominated by the men around her and that she has to allow them to do what they went to her.
Later into the film we see Anna again when Jack phones her. Jack starts to talk sexually to her, but with no emotion, as he tells her to take her bra off, she at first says no. But gives in to him and accepts what he says and does it. But us the audience are able to see her taking her bra off where Jack can not, this is the theory 'The Male Gaze' in action, as she is presented as an erotic object for the spectator, that being us. Again representing women as passive and completely obedient towards males. Also through the scenes where we watch Anna being pleasured by only the sound of Jack's voice and demonstrating his power over her, Anna is framed in a way that makes it seem as if someone is watching her, as we get these obscured shots it provides a voyeuristic experience for the audience. When Carter is about to hangup the call with Anna, she says that she's going "to cum" referring to having an orgasm, but Jack instructs her to wait till he gets there on sunday. Showing that Anna doesn't even have the control over if she can pleasure herself or not without Jacks authority, showing that Anna is just someone who is controlled by men and can't do anything she wants to willingly.
Glenda is another female character who is shown through the film, when she first enters the film she is represented as a passive servant to all the men around her. But is also represented in a sexual way by wearing the mini skirt and that she flirts with Jack. But after her flirtation with Jack she tries to tell him important information about his brother, which is why the narrative started because Jack wants to know what happened to him. But when she tries to tell Jack she gets drowned out by complete nonsense from Kinnear and the card game, showing even when men aren't contributing anything important they're still heard over women, even if they have something valuable to say.
