how does the way in which men are represented in Get Carter reflect the time in which it was made?

Men in Get Carter are represented on their attitudes and behaviour towards women. For example, this film portrays a society in which women are not liberated, except in superficial ways such as pleasing men. The female characters are all victims, owned and used by men. This is shown within the scene of Margaret's death. Carter uses Margaret to get back at Kinnear, however instead of just shooting her, he humiliates and degrades her by forcing her to strip and then over dosing her with drugs. This shows Carter outside of context which makes him inhumane and unlikeable.  When Carter is in context we can identify with him and everything he's gone through.

When Carter kills Margaret, the spectators within the audience are given the chance to gaze at Margaret's body. This implies that women within the film are portrayed as an erotic object and the male gaze is purposely used to reinforce that. However, it can be argued that if the film had a female director instead of a male director then the representations would differ. The camera reinforces women as passive, submissive and also as an erotic object when we see Margaret in a pov shot from Carter. We see her striping naked, connoting that she is used by nothing more than an object by men. With this pov shot, we as an audience are encouraged to view women in the same way as Carter, as a tool for his mission or as an object of lust. This scene reflects the view held by men that women were of a lower status.
