How does the way men are represented in Get Carter reflect the time in which it was made?
The representations of men in Get Carter reflects the time in which it was made by how men treat in women the film. In the scene were Carter rips open Edna's blouse we see that she is annoyed with him. We are always shot from over Carter's shoulder giving us his POV and Edna is always shot at a high angle to show that she is lower and that men are represented as dominant in every situation. It also represents men as stronger than women an that they are superior to women as a whole. When Carter rips open her blouse it represents men as vulgar and shows them having the power of women, he threatens her by saying "I'll tell everyone that you wear purple underwear", showing to us that men only get what they want by being aggressive and abusive towards women. In the late 60s/early 70s it was said that women had been liberated due to the pill as it just came out but i think that this was yet another device too control women as it didn't give them freedom over their own bodies as men had the power to choose when they have children or not.
Another scene that represents men would be the scene were Carter kills Margaret. The way Margaret is killed is such an embarrassing and degrading way to die and Carter didn't care about her, this represents men as heartless and they only use men as an accessory to reach their target. We see Margaret from a POV from Carter and we see her stripping. When watching this we are forced to see Margaret through Carter's eyes and see her as an erotic object, we also get the chance to gaze at her naked body, going back to the male gaze theory that women are there to serve men in the film and the men watching the film.
- Anna in the bed- male gaze theory
- kinnear and all the women in his house
- all men are bad to women
