The opening credit sequence for Vertigo begins with an extreme close up of Madeleine's cheek and mouth. This prepares us for how women are represented in Vertigo as Madeleine is fetishised ultimately exploiting Madeleine's sexuality, allowing us as an audience to gaze upon Madeline strengthening the key themes in the film which is that of voyeurism. By the camera denying a close up, but instead an extreme close up it denies Madeleine an identity and prepares us to view her as passive. By names such as James Stewart and Alfred Hitchcock appearing over the fetishised shots of Madeleine's lips and eyes it connotes the possession that they both have over Madeleine, as Alfred reflects his ideal woman upon Kim Novak in which Stottie controls Judy.
