The representation of men in Get Carter

During the 'Swinging sixties' men were believed to have gained respect for women as they had gained rights after World War two, Get Carter goes against this mythology.

For example in the scene when Carter goes to Glenda's house, in the beginning of this scene Carter is in Glenda's car whilst she is driving the camera focuses on Glenda's body through multiple close ups/POV shots on her legs, face and chest. This shows how Carter views Glenda as the shots are his POV, the fact Carter focuses on her body more than anything else shows how he only sees her as a erotic object that he looks at for pleasure. This also follows the Male Gaze theory as the theory believes women are sexualised in all films as they are in this scene specifically.

When Carter arrives at Glenda's home he uses her for sex and Glenda does so as she is fulfilling his needs as women in the films main purpose is to serve men and men use women for their own pleasure. Carter also uses Glenda for information by seducing her - during which the camera focuses on Glenda's chest mainly - when Carter has the information and has used Glenda and she has fulfilled his needs she leaves the room.

After Glenda leaves the room Carter remains in the room and begins to watch pornography, he enjoys it at the beginning and smiles whilst watching it as he takes pleasure in watching sexualised women, this is until his niece appears in which Carter begins to cry and react aggressively. Carter reacts this way because he cares about his family but only in a superficial way, this is shown when he confronts Glenda, he says that he and his niece share the same second name which is the main reason he is so bothered as his niece represents him and by being in the pornography she is affecting Carter's status.

This scene shows how Carter as a man doesn't have any respect for the woman in the scene and uses her for his own needs, being sex and information and Glenda fulfils this need as it is her core duty. Carter views Glenda as a sexual object which is shown in the way he views her when she is driving and when Carter is seducing her for information he needs.
