Vertigo

The opening shot of this film shows the face and lips of Madeleine. In this first shot, her lips twitch nervously, introducing anxiety and a close examination of the character's physical appearance as integral themes. The camera then pans to the right to focus on her lips giving the idea that Madeleine is mute and does not have a voice, reflecting on the idea that what she says in the film is not important however the dialogue of the male characters is. By Hitchcock showing Madeline as a series of body part rather than a full person, he is denying Madeleine's identity and introducing her to the spectators as an object. From this shot, we see the camera fetishising Madeleine and portraying the theme of obsession which is shown mostly through the character of Scotty throughout Vertigo.
