Hubert analysis
The scene begins with a mid-shot of Hubert, he is sitting on his bed but he doesn't fit into the shot. As he is too big it represents how he has too much to offer and how the environment he is in is stifling his creativity and forcing him to be something he doesn't want to be. He also appears to be praying in the first shot, implying that he's asking for gods forgiveness because he is dealing drugs. The shot then flashes into the exact same shot type but instead Hubert is getting ready to cut the marijuana up to sell. Hubert then puts the marijuana behind his chest-of-drawers. It doesn't look like this is Hubert's first time doing this and instead it's like routine for him. Hubert's room is small for a 20ish year old and he has flowery wallpaper but he doesn't seem to be bothered by it. Instead he made the room his own by putting up posters. The posters are that of his role models, Muhammad Ali, Tommie Smith and John Carlos. They all have one attribute in common, they are all non-French. Throughout his whole life Hubert has been told he isn't French because of his ethnicity so now that he's older he has decides to reject his culture and adopt another, much like Muhammad Ali who was actually born Cassius Clay but he decided to change it when he got older because he believed it was his slave name. Hubert is also listening to Issac Hayes, a famous African-American singer/songwriter. Hubet also had boxing gloves on top of his chest-of-drawers as well of his gym which shows that they are his means to escape. By adopting this alternate persona Hubert can attempt to escape his environment.
