Blade Runner's opening scene is very significant as it sets the scene for the entire film. It opens with a establishing wide shot of the city that creates the sense of mystery and the sense that something has gone wrong. The world is a connotation of hell and therefore there's fire and the industrial buildings are are all dark are black, the world is very unpleasant at this stage. The skyline is brown, this shows that the environment is polluted and therefore dangerous for the characters, if there are any, as it seems the film is very dystopian and society has collapsed.
The camera consistently moves very slowly towards the pyramid. Not only does this create a sense of space but the audience are slowly being drawn into a strange world. The pyramid is always the centre of the shot, as we get closer the shot becomes low angle, this makes the audience aware that the pyramid is the centre of power and is significant to the film. There are cooler colours on the tower such as blue, still creating and giving us that sense of negativity.
The extreme close up of the eye creates mystery. It makes the audience ask questions like, who does the eye belong to? The eye is said to be the window to the soul, this creates empathy but also lacks emotion. The reflection of the fire and the city gives the audience the sense that this person is the ruler.
