In the opening sequence of Blade Runner, the director Ridley Scott uses an extreme wide shot of a city that is swallowed in darkness with tall columns spitting out fire. The establishing shot is used to inform us that the location is in the future and may be a futuristic city due to the flying cars. In this shot we can see a futuristic Los Angles. What we imagine is the skyline, is darkness followed by brown thick smoke which makes us believe that this 'Earth' and its environment is highly polluted. Earth is in physical decay, there is no evidence of nature and the skyline is dominated by industry.
The camera then slowly moves forward as if to draw us into a pyramid like building which represents the centre of power due to the only building including colour which is blue. The colour blue lacks emotion showing this may be a negative area. A Lighting bolt strikes and a huge ball of fire appears, this creates the sense that this dystopian world is hell. The darkness, fire and smoke represent hell and evilness and indicates that something has gone horribly wrong on Earth such as a chemical war or nuclear war which has had a huge impact and resulting in humans in danger.
the next scene presents an extreme close up of an eye. This eye contains a reflection of the world indicating this person is taking in the world. The eye does not show or reveal the person however is represents more than just someone watching. it ties with emotion and their identity, and hiding it provides us with evidence that this person does not want us to know who they are and whether they are dangerous or helpful.
