Blade Runner - Establishing Scene
The first shot we are met with in Blade Runner is an extreme wide shot showing LA in 2019. This scene tells us that this film is a futuristic sci-fi and that the world has entered a dystopian age. The landscape is dark and mechanical with balls of fire and thick black smoke tarnishing the skyline. The camera is constantly bringing us forward dragging us slowly into the nightmarish world. The world world itself is reminiscent of biblical depictions of hell with no natural colours and under a constant darkness.
The next shot is an extreme close up of an eye. The eye is symbolic of emotion and human identity. The identity of the blue eye however is unknown making it mysterious and encourages the audience to continue watching to find out who it belongs to. In the eye we can see the reflection of the burning city below the character, this establishes that this person has power and is possibly in control of this hellish landscape.
The scene then cuts to the extreme wide shot again taking us through the burning city. We are gradually being brought closer to a tall pyramid structure illuminated in blue and white colours. These are the only cool colours we have seen in the landscape so far contrasting it from the rest of the world and establishing its significance within the story. As well as this the blue connotes lack of emotion and suggests something cold may be inside. The pyramid is in the heart of the fiery hell and is the tallest structure in the scene. Throughout history pyramids have been used to show power and this case is no different as it appears to be in the heart of this foreign world.
