Shaun Of The Dead - FILM REVIEW

Directed by - Edgar Wright
Written by - Simon Pegg

Shaun Of The Dead was released in April 2004 and was directed by Edgar Wright. This was Edgar Wright's first film he directed as he had previously only worked on TV stuff. He later went onto direct films such as Hot Fuzz and The Worlds End. Shaun Of The Dead managed to win an NME for best film in 2005.

PLOT
Shaun (Simon Pegg) is a twenty-nine year old sales clerk in an electrical store who still lives with his best friend Ed (Nick Frost) who is unemployed. Shaun has a girlfriend called Liz (Kate Ashfield) who thinks it's time for Shaun and Ed to grow up.  Together the duo (Shaun and Ed) are two ordinary losers who are going about there everyday lives until they come across flesh-eating zombies. There lives are then left in the hands of Shaun to save.

CINEMATOGRAPHY
This film uses ordinary actions and makes them intense by the use of closeups, loud sound effects and unexpected transitions. The first shot of the movie shows Shaun looking at himself in the mirror while getting ready for work. He reaches up to close mirror cabinet but within a quick transition you get the scary movie cliché of someone standing right behind it. The cameras movement and angles in this particular film will keep you on the edge of your seat. Throughout the film there is a variety of songs from the likes of Queen, Ash, Goblin and I Monster. The songs add a comedy effect in most scenes with the odd one used to build tension.

MISE-EN-SCENE
In Shaun Of The Dead, there are two scenes of Shaun walking to the local shop that use mise-en-scene. The first one is before the zombie apocalypse and the second one is during the zombie apocalypse.

OVERALL
Personally, I enjoyed this film mostly due to the special effects that had been used but also because from start to finish it was non stop comedy. I would rate this film a 4.5 out of 5 either though Simon Pegg is one of my favourite actors. There was room for improvement within the plot but that's my opinion.
