Psycho analysis

The start of the scene starts with a low angle , medium shot. the angle of the shot makes Norman Bates look dominant and quite intimidating. The lighting of the shot is also low key, this connotes the darkness of Norman Bates. Behind Norman in the shot are two lamps, this is significant as it shows that Norman had left the light behind him and is now consumed by darkness. Normans hobby for taxidermy is shown in this shot by the birds of prey that are positioned around him. the birds of prey could represent Norman himself. From where he is standing his head is replacing one of the birds of preys head, this portrays him as quite demonic as it is in n attack mode and could be foreshadowing what is to come.

The shot then switches to a mid shot. In this shot Marion and Norman are sitting down however there is quite a lot of space between them. Norman is consumed by darkness whereas Marion is sitting by the lamp and is sitting in the light. This highlights the danger of Norman and the innocence of Marion. We ,as an audience are closer to Marion in this shot and Norman is distanced from us. This connotes the danger of him.

The mid shot of Marion next is high key lighting. This shows the audience the contrast between two characters as Norman is always placed in the dark. Marion, in this shot is placed in the corner, this is to highlight that she has no way to escape if she needs to. The lamp at the side of her suggests that she is safe for now. The body language of Marion is introvert, she is closed over and quite private in the way she moves and talks. Marion is constantly surrounded by small birds such as budgies whereas Norman is surrounded by birds of prey. This itself could be foreshadowing what is to come.
