Psycho Analysis

The scene starts with a mid to wide shot showing Norman Bates alone and isolated in the back of the motel, the lighting of this whole scene is low key which adds mystery to the film and give is that dangerous aspect. Due to all the low lighting is creates a lot of shadows and give a oppressive atmosphere as the only light emitted is coming from two small lamps behind Norman, this gives connotations that Normal is a strange sort of character and due to the light being behind him it gives off the impression he has left the light behind him and that he is being consumed by the darkness around him. There is also a shadow casted behind Norman's head of a birds wings in an attacking position, this shows that there could be potential danger that comes with knowing Norman and that Marion may get caught up in this. In addition to this it is a low angle shot so the audience will be looking up to him showing he dominates the environment and gives a very intimidating touch to his character. The is also the fact that all the birds Norman has stuffed are all birds of prey and that he has and always will be surrounded by death.
The camera then stays at a mid shot but has Norman and Marion in the shot together, in this there is a large space between the two showing unfamiliarity and give off a very uncomfortable and awkward vibe. Norman is further away from the audience in this shot showing distance and that people don't really want to get close to Norman where as Marion is close to the audience creating a personal link and further on into the film we can empathise with her as we have gained this connection with her in this scene. The light is also next to Marion showing she is the light of the room and she is a very happy and good being where as Norman gets lost in the darkness of the room, there is also a small bird behind Marion and a bird of prey next to Norman, this signifies their difference in personality and that he is quite villainous where as she is pure. This is also signified though Marion's light blonde hair and Normans harsh brown hair.
After this the shot changes to a medium close up of Marion, there is a lamp next to her signifying she is safe for now and that she emits light whereas Norman oozes darkness. However Marion is still small compared to Norman as when the camera is on him he dominates the shot whereas here Marion is pushed into the corner of the shot showing she is trapped and alone. Marion's body language is also very introverted and close over showing discomfort around Norman, there are also two birds next to the phone across from Marion which signify innocence this is key as around Marion there are all small harmless birds but then Norman is shot there are a lot of birds of prey. this signifies how he is dangerous and she is innocent.
