Psycho Cinematography and Mise –en –scene Analysis
In the first scene we see that Norman is surrounded by
birds of prey. From this it tell the audience that he is represented as the
hunter and also gives the character a sense of danger. The audience can also
tell this by the way that the bird is position behind him we see that Normans
head is the place of the brides. This
gives the impression that he looks like the bird and also he is
surrounded by death that tells the audience about his murderous side of him.
In the second shot we see that Norman is constantly
shadowed in darkness. This gives of the sense of his split personality and that
tells the audience about his darker side. We also see that Marian’s character
always has a light behind her which shows the audience of her innocence. The
camera is position close to Marian and further away from Norman this is done so
that the audience can empathies with her when she is killed. We also see in
this scene that he also refers to her as bird which also tell us about his fascinations
with birds
In this scene we see that Marian's character is pushed
to one side of the screen. This is to show that she is seen as small and
compacted into one space as well a nervous and weary of Norman. We also see in
this scene that Marian is surrounded by small bird thus tells the audience that
she is portrayed as the prey. We also see that she is in the light this tells
us that when she is in the light she is safe.
In the next scene we see that Norman has become much
more relaxed in her presence. The audience can tell this by the way his body
language. In the first scene we see that Norman is seen as shy and nervous
around her we can tell this because of the way he is sitting hunched together.
While in this scene he is less hunched together. The audience can also learn
that this is the first time he has been in the presence of an woman since his
mother.
