Your homework task this week is to write a detailed and sophisticated analysis of the cinematography used during the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan.
Your work must include:
- All shot types labelled correctly
- All camera moves / techniques identified and labelled
- An appreciation of how the film and the audience interact
- Analysis and explanation of HOW the camera choices (shot types etc) 'POSITION' the audience; and how does this manipulate / create our response to the sequence?
Consider:
- What does the hand held technique add to the sequence?
- What are the main differences between the way the US Soldiers are shot from the perspective of: US Marines and the Nazi Gunners?
- How does Spielberg attempt to embed the audience within the action - and what impact does this have on our response?
